Community in Eldos promises the death of a child will be the last

FAMILIAR faces are attending a funeral service of a 4 year-old in Eldorado Park today.

The little girl, whose murder triggered unhappiness in the community of Eldos and caught the attention of the entire country, was physically and sexually assaulted by her father.

According to the charge sheet, the father is facing multiple charges, including murder, rape, assault and child abuse, whilst the mother, who opened the case, also face charges of murder and failing to report sexual offences against her child.

Both appeared at the Protea Magistrate’s Court on Monday, and abandoned their bail applications.

The Police also confirmed the child sustained head injuries, bruises and a swollen eye.

The accused allegedly assaulted both the girl and her two-year-old brother, who is now in the care of social workers.

The family of the little girl will run the service alas the parents.

Herman Mashaba, leader of Action SA, EFF and ANC party members are amongst mourners at the funeral held at Eldorado Park hall, this morning.

City of Joburg’s Speaker Margaret Arnolds has warned such incidents should be the last in communities, as they demean ‘ubuntu’ amongst citizens.

“This is enough now, way too much. If members keep quite when such barbaric acts happen in our homes, what else is taking shape in our homes, backyards and streets?” she asked in a very terse voice.
