Dr Maelane performs knee injury using state of the art CORI robotic at the Dr Matseke Memorial Hospital

CLINIX HEALTH Group, a leading provider of quality healthcare services in the local townships, has achieved a significant milestone for the black-owned medical group by performing the first orthopaedic knee surgery using the state-of-the-art CORI robotic surgical system at one of its facilities.

Dr Shilly Peter Maelane, a renowned orthopaedic surgeon, performed the surgery at the Dr SK Matseke Memorial Hospital in January 2023, using the all-new and advanced CORI robotic surgical system by Smith+Nephew.

The use of robotic surgical equipment highlights the future-facing vision that young and inspired doctors have for innovative solutions. Thanks to the technology, a substantial number of patients will enjoy reduced adverse effects compared to traditional surgery and can now look forward to shorter healing time with improved overall outcomes.

The use of robotic surgical equipment has also bred more confidence for the doctors due to higher levels of precision and guidance throughout the procedure.

On a larger scale, the adoption of robotics is now leading to rapid improvements in surgeon knowledge and information with each procedure conducted providing vital insights that are shared amongst healthcare professionals who utilise the system.

The patient who underwent the knee arthroplasty surgery was suffering from Stage 3 Osteoarthritis, a common form of arthritis. Her previous three surgeries at other facilities were unsuccessful. However, with the introduction of the handheld robot, Dr Maelane has been able to successfully operate and treat the patient who is now healing well.

Speaking about the achievement Dr Maelane said, “The introduction of the CORI robotic surgical system is a game-changer in the field of orthopaedic surgery in the country. The use of this technology has challenged us as surgeons, to be precise at our craft but more importantly it has reduced the likelihood of post-operative infections, which is a significant concern in traditional knee surgery.”

Dr SK Matseke Memorial Hospital has earned a well-deserved reputation as a highly respected private healthcare facility.

And now with the inclusion of the CORI robotic surgical system, it has transformed the way orthopaedic surgeries are performed.
