SINCE the expose by KZN police commissioner Lt-Gen Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi on alleged removal of case dockets, implicating senior officials within SAPS, the needle seems to be moving.
This week National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola, ordered the 121 dockets should be sent back to provinces, including KZN, for further investigations and processing.
General Masemola said 121 case dockets were removed from the task team and handed to the office of the deputy commissioner for crime detection, Gen Shadrack Sibiya.
Five of those dockets already had instructions to arrest the suspects, he said on Thursday.
For now its unknown of those suspects but some of well-known dodgy figures are appearing in court, already.
“I wrote the letter to the detectives and the provincial commissioner to return them, but I know that they must go through a process of checking, making copies and then taking them back.”
“He said the nature of the cases being handled by the task team was not simple to investigate as they included cases of murder, attempted murder and intimidation, and that he was not expecting arrests soon,” says National Police Commissioner.
In a few weeks, says Gen Masemola, the police will open a leg of the political killings task team in Gauteng to investigate some unresolved and “complex” cases of murders of politicians and taxi-violence related incidents.
It seems Lt General Mkhwanazi has opened a can of worms and there’s movement, as we await the resumption of the Madlanga Commission, which is yet to sit after the unfortunate postponement, originally scheduled for September 1 2025.
