Hail and the damaging winds took control of mother nature in what has been described the worst hail ever to hit the City.
Worst affected were citizens who stay in the banks of Jukskei River, Alexandra.
This prompted the MEC for Housing Settlement and former Alexandra resident Paul Mashatile to come and witness the situation in person, alongside Doctors Without Borders organization.
“We have sent out an alert‚ but not yet a warning. It means there is a possibility and the conditions are favourable for it to develop again‚” said forecaster Wayne Venter, after the hail.
He cautioned the rainfall was expected towards the afternoon and evening‚ with chances of rain at 60%.
“The rainfall could result in the flash floods that took place yesterday‚ we have a possibility of severe storms and localised flooding,” warned Venter.
“If you are on the road and rainfall is heavy‚ turn around and go to a safe place until it has subsided,” he said.
This also almost affected us, as we made our way to the annual Whisky Live Festival at the Sandton Convention Center.
Fortunately, we used different route to access Sandton and by the time we entered the venue, social media was abuzz with images of cars crashed, bridges collapsed and the public stranded.
Sadly, some lives were lost.
Meanwhile, South African Weather Service issued a possibility of heavy rainfall in Gauteng on Thursday.
The agency also warned people in low-lying areas to be extra careful and avoid low-lying bridges.
Yes, we needed rain but not this severe damage that claimed lives.
