GSA awards open for entries

GAUTENG sportsmen and women are set to take centre stage at the 12th annual Gauteng Sports Awards.

The awards, under the theme “Enabling excellence, inspiring the youth”, were officially launched at Ellis Park, last week.

The annual event, hosted by the Gauteng Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation, recognises, honours, and rewards Gauteng’s sporting excellence – paying tribute to individuals and teams who have excelled on and off the field.

The considered period for this year’s edition is 01 August 2022 to 31 July 2023.

The Gauteng Sports Awards align with the key priority of the department of promoting Gauteng as the Home of Champions, where significant sports, arts, and cultural events contribute to the growth of the Gauteng economy and promote sustainable livelihoods for sportsmen and women, artists, and crafters.

The launch event saw the department detailing the nomination process and the categories for the awards.

Nominations have now opened and will close on 4 August 2023.

Sports achievers can be nominated by sports stakeholders (federations and sports councils), role players, and the public.

The adjudication panel will then select three finalists in selected categories and decide on the winner.

For the category Sports Personality of the Year, the panel will select three to four finalists, and the public will vote for the winner.

For the Lifetime Achievement Award/s, the winner/s will be chosen by MEC Morakane Mosupyoe.

All processes will be monitored by a team of independent auditors.

The awards will feature 20 categories, including Sportsman of the Year, Sportswoman of the Year, Disabled Sportsman of the Year, Disabled Sportswoman of the Year, Most Promising Athlete of the Year, Amayanga-Yanga Player of the Year, Sports Journalist of the Year and Fan of the Year.

A new category included is the Sports Photographer of the Year.

MEC Morakane Mosupyoe said, “Through the awards, we hope to inspire talented young people across the province to develop into competitive sportsmen and women.

“Gauteng is the largest contributor of sports stars and heroes in South Africa and is a breeding ground for raw talent, which when identified and nurtured, can explode into record-breaking levels.”

GSA awards will take place in November 2023.
