Hard fought win for Bucs

Last night up against Black Leopards at Orlando Stadium, Pirates puffed and huffed as they squandered chances to convert easy goals which could have buried the out of sort Leopards leaking defence but it was not to be.

The only highlight of the game was when Bucs’ striker the re-energized Thulasizwe Mbuyane converted a beautiful header cross courtesy of the unproductive Ndumiso Mabena in the first half of the game.

By his standard Mbuyane was curtailed not to move as much as expected and his partnership with Benni McCarthy failed to bother the Leopards goalminder, apart from saves the latter made.

Would it be justifiable to point out, perhaps most of the players from both teams were a bit rusty after a recess? You’re at liberty to draw your own conclusion.

‘Tso’ Vilakazi’s days at Leopard could numbered and most of soccer scribes all agreed that could be the case. In the first half of the game Vilakazi who is known as the little ‘Napoleon’ was found to be wanting in most cases.

It’s true that looks can be deceiving and ‘Tso’ from afar looked strong and fit but that did not warrant him a ninety minutes play, having been substituted in the 30th minute of the second half by his irritated and melodramatic coach.

The introduction of the much publicized international striker Louis Boa Morte did not yield anything suffice to say, the left footed striker who was partnered with his friend Benni after the substitution of Mabena, sparkled with deft passes which was something to write home about. His touches spoke volume and aerial strength will prove too difficult for opponents.

As for Leopards, shame! They could have converted their opportunities but their wayward play and ill-advised strikers did not produce the kind of performance they’re paid for.

A very noble message to Mr Thidiela, buy quality and you’ll be repaid with quality results. Amen!

Albeit the stadium was not packed the crowd tried at all cost to please their champs with dotted numbers!

At the end Pirates won 1-0, but it remains to be seen whether they will use the same formation when they open their African Champs league account against Recreativo de Libolo from Angola on Sunday at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium?

It did not work for Pirates coach and the sooner he rectifies that, the better.
