Mafikizolo lead the pack at this years’ Malibongwe ‘Tribute to Women’ fest

THE annual Malibongwe Art Festival “Tribute To Women” enters its 6th iteration this year.

In recognition of women of substance in mzansi, it has been pencilled for August 25 (Sunday) at Mark’s Park in Emmerentia from 10am to 6pm.

Yes, you will be paid, so come out in numbers, or kanjani? Tickets start from R195 to R295.

South Africa proudly marks 30 years of democracy, and the fest promises a day of unforgettable experiences, in a celebration that honours the strength, resilience, and creativity of women in South Africa and beyond.

The creative line-up boasts stars namely Zonke, Ringo Madlingozi, Jaziel Brothers, Nomfundo Moh, Kelvin Momo, and Lwah Ndlunkulu.

And what would the fest be, without all-time favourite Mafikizolo, who are trailblazers in their own right, locally or globally? This is a party not to be missed…

“Our journey with Malibongwe Art Festival has been one of growth and evolution, mirroring the dynamic spirit of South African women. Last year, we were honoured to host 8000 attendees, and this year, we anticipate an even greater turnout.

This festival is a collective celebration of our heritage and the transformative power of women’s contributions to our society,” commented legendary Joe Chakela of Sheer Entertainment, who are the organisers of the festival.

They’ve partnered with Breakout Events in collaboration with the South African Music Performance Rights Association (SAMPRA).

Reflecting on “our journey, we are compelled to celebrate the remarkable contributions of South African women over the past three decades”.

From the valiant struggle against apartheid to their pivotal roles in building a democratic nation, women have been at the forefront of change. Figures like Dr.Mamphela Ramphele, a medical doctor and anti-apartheid activist, have inspired countless individuals with her unwavering commitment to social justice and education; Desire Ellis who was voted CAF Woman coach of the year from 2018 to 2023 and qualified Banyana Banyana to the knockout rounds of the Women’s World Cup for the first time in their history; Laura Wolvaardt who recorded the highest runs in the ICC T20 Cricket World Cup in 2023; Kgothatso Montjane who won the Women Singles title and Doubles title in the disabled category at the Wimbledon Tennis in 2021 and 2024 respectively, a first for a South African woman tennis player in the history of the tournament; the first female Deputy Chief Justice (and soon to be Chief Justice) Mandisa Maya; and musician Nomcebo Zikode who won a Grammy award in January 2023 following in the footsteps of Miriam Makeba, just to highlight a few.
