‘Matlala gave me money, several times’ admits disgruntled Mkhwanazi

JULIUS Mkhwanazi, whose chequered life as Ekurhuleni Deputy Police Chief, is questionable.

The suspended Mkhwanazi, who is unrelated to KZN Provincial Commissioner Lt. Gen Nhlanhlahla Mkhwanazi, is appearing at the Madlanga Commission, admitted he received gratification/ money from the controversial businessman Vusimusi “CAT’ Matlala, between R15 000 and R20 000 per occasion.

He’s testimony is that of facilitating the registration of Matlala’s vehicles under the City of Ekurhuleni and subsequently fitting them with blue lights, amongst others, of which he objected on Wednesday.

“I did receive money from Matlala, but did not fit blue-lights into his cars,” remarked Mkhwanazi at the Commission.

“The money I received was meant for food, petrol and assistance for one of my siblings funeral,” he continued, much to the surprise of all and sundry.

Evidence leader Mahlape Sello put it to him: “On the basis of all that I seek to persuade the Commissioners that this is in part gratification. I am not even suggesting that this is the totality but at least we know that in the letter of intention to commit Mr Matlala had started making significant payments to you.”

“Matlala even promised me far more than that. Even now when there was nothing that was happening, he said when I get this ngamla, you will retire and you will find another business. And I was very happy.”

The same Mkhwanazi, who seemed hype and at times called to toe the line when answering questions, is also accused of murder, soliciting bribes, and defeating the end of justice.

He’s set to return to the commission and provide more evidence.

Meanwhile, the ‘put on leave’ minister of Police- Senzo Mchunu is today appearing before the Madlanga Commission.
