IT has been confirmed Rulani Mokwena has left his club Mamelodi Sundowns or ‘pushed out’.
Allegations are he did not see-eye to-eye with the club’s Sporting Director-Flemming Berg, a former Chelsea FC senior staff member.
Mokwena is only a year into his four-year contract extension and his relationship with Berg seemed not healthy for either parties.
The writing was on the wall following the departure of seasoned players such as Bongani Zungu after his contract came to end.
Mokwena was quoted as having said that it was not his decision to release the experienced midfielder.
Thabiso Kutumela, Brian Onyango and Gaston Sirino have also been shown the door upon the expiry of their respective contracts at Chloorkop.
Mokwena has led the Tshwane giants to two league titles after assuming the role as a sole head coach. He also won the league twice as a co-coach with Maqoba Mngqithi following the departure of decorated manager Pitso Mosimane in 2020.
Brazilians faithful who backed the coach despite another disappointing exit in the semifinals of the Caf Champions League two seasons in a row, will feel unjust by the move.
The (37) Mokwena won the club the African Football League and domestic championship last season, 7- in a row.
“Mamelodi Sundowns and Rulani Mokwena amicably concluded an agreement bringing to an end his employment as head coach,” the club stated in the statement.
“Sundowns wishes to express its gratitude to Rulani Mokwena for his contribution to the success and achievements of the club during his tenure as head coach.
“Rulani Mokwena will forever be part of the Sundowns family and the club wishes him all of the very best with his future endeavors.”
“Sundowns is deeply committed to the development and growth of SA coaches and players,” the statement continued.
“Coach Manqoba and the technical team will continue to lead and take control of the training and preparation of the players for the upcoming season.
“Mamelodi Sundowns is preparing and focusing on competing in all upcoming competitions and is honored to be one of the four clubs representing the African continent in the historic Fifa Club World Cup 2025.”
Its unknown which coach has been earmarked to fill the vacant coach post.
Players have also sent their messages of gratitude to Mokwena.
Mngqithi and technical team will oversee the European camp of the team.
