WASTE collection services remain disrupted for the second consecutive day due to Pikitup employees gathering outside the City of Johannesburg’s Mayor’s office to raise their concerns.
Because of this gathering, no waste collection will take place today while senior management from Pikitup and representatives from the Mayor’s office work to address the employees’ grievances.
While details are still unclear, the issues seem to relate to Pikitup’s decision to stop transporting employees to and from work due to safety concerns.
This decision followed objections from the City’s taxi industry, which claimed that they are the registered and legal transport provider for workers.
The mayor’s office is working to resolve the dispute between the two parties.
As a result of the halted transportation and ongoing discussions, employees have stopped working since 02 April 2025.
“Pikitup assures residents that the matter is being urgently addressed. Once resolved, normal waste collection services will resume,” read a media statement.
“We apologize for the inconvenience and will keep residents informed through the media and our social media platforms.”
