PSL 2024/25 awards dominated by Bucs starlet Mofokeng

ORLANDO PIRATES sensational jewel Relebohile Mofokeng, has been nominated in more than five categories for the 2024/25 Premier Soccer League (PSL) awards.

Its no-wonder the ‘wunder-kid’ from Vaal has been nominated in all key categories, its because he’s been consistent and offered the free role by his club, on the field of play.

With age still on his side, ‘Rele’ as he’s synonymous to fans and family, who are behind his down to earth approach), saw his profile grow and subsequently was roped into the Bafana Bafana team.

During his time off, the dribbling wizard held his annual soccer games in his home town.

Although unconfirmed if he will still be Bucs player in the new football season, depending on the talks he might jet-off overseas, ‘Rele’s future is bright and not big-headed.

At the 2024/25 PSL awards, to be held on July 29, the stocky player face tough opposition from the likes of Keletso Makgalwa (Sekhukhune United) and Lucas Ribeiro Costa (Mamelodi Sundowns) in the prestigious Footballer of the Season award.

In the Betway Premiership Young Player of the Season category, Rele will face the likes of Malibongwe Khoza (Mamelodi Sundowns) and teammate Mohau Nkota.

 ‘Rele’ also has to face-off with Fawaaz Basadien (Stellenbosch FC), and teammate Deon Hotto, while the Magesi FC duo of Elvis Chipezeze and Edmore Chirambadare, along with Mamelodi Sundowns’ Iqraam Rayners, are nominated for the Carling Knockout Player of the Tournament and the MTN8 Last Man Standing categories, respectively.

In the Nedbank Cup Player of the Tournament category, all three nominees — Inacio Miguel, Pule Mmodi, and Gaston Sirino — come from Kaizer Chiefs, meanwhile, the Nedbank Cup Most Promising Player category is dominated by Orlando Pirates- Mbekezeli Mbokazi and Mohau Nkota, who are Mofokeng’s teammates.

The nominees for the Betway Premiership Coach of the Season are Steve Barker (Stellenbosch FC), Miguel Cardoso (Mamelodi Sundowns), and Jose Riveiro (Orlando Pirates), who has since left the club.


This year’s awards also see the introduction of three new categories in the Motsepe Foundation Championship.

Nominees for Players’ Player of the Season are Banele Hlophe (JDR Stars), Joslin Kamatuka (Durban City FC), and Muzomuhle Khanyi (Hungry Lions).

Luke Baartman (Cape Town Spurs), Teboho Lekhatla (Casric Stars), and Siphamandla Mhlongo (Milford FC) are shortlisted for Young Player of the Season, while Emile Lako (Casric Stars), Sekhoane Moerane (Orbit College), and Dumsani Msibi (Durban City FC) have been nominated for Goalkeeper of the Season.


The nominees for the DStv Diski Challenge Player of the Season are Gomolemo Kekana of Mamelodi Sundowns, Ntandoyenkosi Nkosi of Kaizer Chiefs, and Tylon Smith of Stellenbosch FC.

Voting and Nomination Procedures:

  • Footballer of the Season: Nominations and voting conducted exclusively by Premier Division head coaches. Coaches were not allowed to nominate or vote for players from their own teams.
  • Betway Premiership Players’ Player of the Season: Nominations and voting conducted exclusively by Betway Premiership players. Each club was allowed a maximum of 30 votes, with the provision that no player could nominate or vote for their own teammate.
  • Motsepe Foundation Players’ Player of the Season: Nominations and voting conducted exclusively by Motsepe Foundation Championship players. Each club was allowed a maximum of 30 votes, with the provision that no player could nominate or vote for their own teammate.
  • DStv Diski Challenge Player of the Season: Nominations and voting conducted exclusively by the Diski Challenge head coaches. Coaches were not allowed to nominate or vote for players from their own teams.
  • Match Officials: Nominations and voting were conducted exclusively by the SAFA National Referees Committee Panel.
  • All Other Categories: Nominations and voting were undertaken by judging panels comprising football journalists, broadcasters, analysts, and commentators. A comprehensive list of the judging panel will be publicly disclosed following the PSL Awards ceremony.

The awards ceremony takes place Tuesday, 29 July 2025, at 19h00, live on SuperSport PSL Channel and SABC Sport, respectively.
