In 2012 four schools were reported to receive facilities but that has not been the case, and rights group Section27, are having none of it.
On 19 April, the Mail&Guardian reported a similar case in Limpopo where pupils were using pits to relive themselves. Section27 went ahead to investigate the matter, with the results said to be shocking.
The Limpopo Education Department promised Section27 it would provide new toilets to 215 desperate schools. But only one showed such signs of construction.
The multi-million rand Soweto toilet project was supposed to have been completed between August and December last year, but the school’s officials said they did not have any idea when the project would be completed.
The chairperson of the school governing body (identity withheld) said: “It’s uncalled for; we’re looking at issues of proper sanitation and all that”.
This has been seen as utter violation of the children’s rights, but the department said it would wait for its investigation before commenting.
At the time of publishing Section27 group had not commented.
