“Since 4am, people barricaded roads and have been stopping commuters from going to work and stopping children from going to school,” said Randfontein police spokeswoman Captain Appel Ernst.
“Tyres are also being burnt …Right now [8.30am] around 1,500 people are entering Randfontein.”
She said the group had applied on Tuesday for a peaceful service delivery protest and it was granted for 9am to 3pm.
“But they started at 4am,” she said.
Police were on scene, and no arrests had been made yet.
Meanwhile, on Kaya FM this morning a resident from Mohlakeng said they were turned back from work and so were pupils’.
“Its unfortunate this situation has spiralled out of control thus affecting everyone. We hope a solution will be found soon”, she said.
