Riky Ricky still ‘dominates’ even in death

THE UNTIMELY death of one South Africa’s celebrated rapper Riky Rick still continues to be a story that will take time to heal. Legend has it- ‘time heals’.

Messages of condolences continue to pour in locally and internationally; and for his fans its’ more of a ‘celebration’ of his craft than anything else.

Born Rikhado Muziwendlovu Makhado in Umlazi, a sprawling township in KwaZulu-Natal, the ‘Sidlukotini’ hit-maker has left a void hard to fill.

A void indeed, because he touched so many hearts as a result of his simplicity and Ubuntu.

He was the face in SA, for one of the world’s iconic cognac brands Rémy Martin; and plans were afoot to work on his annual Cotton Fest amongst others.

At the time of publishing it was unclear if the concert would go ahead.

In a media statement Sony Music Entertainment Africa says, the music executives and employees are deeply and profoundly saddened by the loss of rapper Riky Rick, a brilliant artist and an inspiration to many.

Managing Director of the company Sean Watson, said: “Riky has been a symbol of commitment to his craft, a dedicated student of his art and an encouraging beacon of support to his peers and successors alike.

Riky was a caring creative who gave everything he had to make a difference to the world that he lived and created in.  The space that Riky leaves will forever echo with his energy and his work will occupy an indelible moment of mastery in the history of this country’s Hip Hop movement. We salute Riky and offer our thoughts and prayers to those he leaves behind,” he said.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and all those who loved him and were touched by him. Riky Rick was nothing less than a giant and his legend will live on forever.

“Rest in peace, Boss Zonke”, concluded Watson.

A confidante I spoke to said, depression is real – and the sooner we all learn to talk, engage and open up, the sooner we shall defeat it.

Details on memorial service and burial will be made soon.
