Following reports of resignations by senior members this week, one is bound to agree that this is becoming likely.
Today, disciplinary hearings against three journalists who had been charged with misconduct got underway.
This was revealed by Independent Newspapers group editor Karima Brown as about 100 journalists and activists picketed outside the SABC’s Auckland Park offices in Johannesburg to protest against the suspensions of Thandeka Gqubulr‚ Foeta Krige and Suna Venter last week.
At the time of publishing the outcome of the hearing was still unknown.
The picket also follows the sudden resignation of acting chief executive officer of SABC Jimi Matthews on Monday‚ citing a “corrosive” atmosphere at the broadcaster‚ and a wide outrage over perceived censorship at the broadcaster.
While this was supposed to be a silent picket‚ the journalists chanted a number of slogans‚ including. “The SABC belongs to the people“‚ “Journalism is not a crime“‚ “No to censorship“‚ “SABC belongs to all of us“‚ “Reinstate them“‚ “We support our colleagues” and “Show us everything“.
I bet with such shenanigans unfolding at SABC, there’s going to be an exodus and only Hlaudi’s puppets will remain…
What happened to freedom of reporting at the public broadcaster and ‘Vuka Sizwe?’
