Semi-finals of the Nedbank Cup a mouthwatering fixture

THE NEDBANK Cup has produced another humdinger in the form of a Soweto derby.

Kaizer Chiefs will face Orlando Pirates in the first semi-finals.

The mouthwatering clash pits two sides that have not gone far in the tourney, which mostly has been dominated by lower leagues outfits.

Bucs scraped through penalties winning 5-4 to beat the stubborn Dondol FC, currently plying their trade in Motsepe League, and on top of the log that could take them to NFD in the new football season.

The ‘Chaba Refete’ side as they’re known, will have dig deep as they’re set to lose key players who have caught the attention of bigger clubs in their heroic cup run.

Players such as captain Kholofelo Monama, goalkeeper Sphamandla Gumede, Kamogelo Sambo Francious Baloyi and Tebogo Makungo, are hot properties and in huge demand by PSL clubs.

The Buccaneers remain on course for a cup double following this victory and facing AmaKhosi won’t be an easy walk in the park. They have secured the MTN cup silverware.

Phefeni Glamour Boys outsmarted the hard-running KZN side Royal AM 2-1 in extra time on Sunday evening at Chatsworth Stadium, KZN, only to be drawn against nemises Bucs.

Surprisingly, PSL 2022/23 champs Mamelodi Sundowns were knocked out of the competition by Stellenbosch ‘rich boys’ Stellies 2-1.

A lot was expected from the Pretoria side, but with the hopes of a treble now dashed, Downs’ has secured the DStv Premiership crown, and are still in pursuit of the CAF Champions League.

The unquenchable ‘Stellies’ had other ideas on the field and produced miracles in Athlone Stadium.

The Rupert owned club face Limpopo side Sekhukhune FC in the second semis.

The date for the fixtures are May 6 & 7 respectively.

Venues will be confirmed soon.

Meanwhile, Nedbank has partnered with renowned coach and football legend Pitso Mosimane and former players Stanton Fredericks, Teko Modise and Daine Klate as well as footballer Siphiwe Tshabalala, to share their stories to inspire South Africans to make decisions that will benefit their future, for this season.
