Soweto Theatre prepares schools for isiZulu reading in the form of festivals

Using ground-breaking means to merge theatre and education, to stimulate creative and individual thinking. This is a great opportunity for all schools in Gauteng to see their isiZulu set books, Ubhuku Lwamanqe and Icala Kaliboli, come alive as Soweto Theatre takes the School Setworks Festival to schools across the province from April– December 2021.

This theatre initiative which was staged and filmed in front of a live audience will be screened at schools for only R50 per learner.

The live screening of the setworks: Ubhuku Lwamanqe and Icala Kaliboli will be an opportunity for students to partake in developing their skills in analysis, interpretation and self – expression of the books set in this year’s curriculum by the Gauteng Department of Education.

Soweto Theatre will come through to schools that have booked with all their equipment for a live screening. Set up in the hall and let learners and educators experience the storyline of their set book in an entirely different form.

Should learners want to watch from the comfort of their own homes, Soweto Theatre has an option for them to buy a ticket for R20 to stream it online.

They can logon to the Soweto Theatre website and purchase their very own ticket.

“The Covid-19 pandemic has presented a change in how things are done and this includes how our children learn and the way we enjoy Theatre. This is why Soweto Theatre is bringing the SETWORKS FESTIVAL 2021 to schools around and across Gauteng, presenting pre-recorded plays that guarantees that audiences will get a dual experience of theatre and learning at the same time. It also exposes learners to the talent and artistic capabilities of local theatre practitioners,” says Makhosazana Hlatshwayo, Youth Development Manager at Soweto Theatre.

The School Setwork Festival is a festival aimed at being a teaching aid to the grade 11 to 12 setwork which is read as part of their first or second home language literature.

A professional company is assigned to assist students to see another side to the text that has been prescribed in a more practical and thought provoking way.

The programme offers the fresh and young cast an opportunity to explore a range of work fields within the theatre environment such as wardrobe, props, stage management, creative directing in music and drama, marketing, sound, lighting and various other career-shaping experiences.

THE TWO PLAYS…

Ubhuku Lwamanqe is a play which follows a story of people who find themselves living complicated lives of conflict, secrets, broken promises, crime and facing consequences that slowly destroy their lives. Ubhuku Lwamanqe is a metaphor that depicts that whatever actions you take or whatever you do will eventually catch up with you and in this case bad decisions were made and this led to a catastrophe.

Icala Kaliboli is centred on a selfish greedy character named Sonto. Sonto being a mistress to a prominent business tycoon grew weary of her status as a mere side chick. She orchestrated the murder of her lover’s wife by engaging the services of professional hit-men by the names of Mtofi and Toronto.
