Surprise, surprise as Manana, Bathabile and Lungisa make it back on the NEC list

THE ANC Electoral Committee, chaired by Kgalema Motlanthe, on Wednesday announced the results of the new members of the National Executive Committee.

Fikile Mbalula, SG says the NEC will constitute new subcommittees and there will be the Integrity Commission.

After January 8 they will have an induction and then an NEC meeting that will deal with the appointment of the new NWC.

On Phala Phala, “Mbaks” as Mbalula is famously known says it has been dealt with in Parliament.

The public protector and other law enforcement agencies are also investigating it, but they will watch the developments as they unfold. But these are issues that the NEC will be watching. He says they want Ramaphosa to finish his term. He has added value to the ANC.

Mbalula says they are going to look at the co-option of minorities. They are allowed to co-opt. He says he did not see Blade Nzimande and Thulas Nxesi in the NEC. But they will talk about it as the NEC.

He says the new NEC is a good mixture of people coming from the ANC Youth League like Mahlengi Bhengu. The president, he says, should be applying his mind about his Cabinet.

He says he wants a Cabinet that is ‘breathing life’. He says Ramaphosa is applying his mind, but it is his prerogative.

The former minister of Transport says he has yet to meet with Ramaphosa about making changes to the Cabinet.

Motlanthe says there were 252 candidates vying for the 80 positions in the NEC. He says the Electoral Committee is satisfied with the process and the results. The NEC comprises 41 women and 39 men.

Motlanthe says they were given the mandate to announce the results publicly after the conference adjourned on Tuesday. He says every province and league deployed two observers to ensure the credibility of the elections.

He says counting was completed at 11 am on Wednesday. They then embarked on an audit process which took 3 hours.

The ANC conference was adjourned on Tuesday and it will reconvene on January 5 in Mangaung to finalise key policy decisions, in preparation for the January 8.
