By virtue of being in the semi-finals of Africa’s premier club competition, Pirates are already guaranteed of $700 000 (approximately R7-million), with more money awaiting them should they proceed to the Final.
The Buccaneers are up against Tunisian powerhouse Esperance Sportive de Tunis in the last four, with the first leg taking place at Orlando Stadium on Saturday evening.
Should Roger de Sa and his troops upset the north Africans and proceed to the deciding match, they will be guaranteed of at least $1 million (R10-million), which is the prize money for the losing finalists.
Winning the Champions League – like they did back in 1995 – will see Pirates cash in US$1.5-million (R15.2-million) and have the joy of being named the kings of African football yet again.
The pride of African champions is spiced up by qualifying for the 2013 FIFA Club World Cup to be held in Morocco in December, where the prize-money is substantially bigger, along with earning the right to play in the 2014 CAF Super Cup against the winners of the CAF Confederations Cup.
Five percent of the prize-money from CAF goes to the mother association SAFA.
Pirates took home R800 000 as losing finalists of the MTN8 Final, just like all the other seven teams which contested for this trophy.
