Thapelo Amad to become new Mayor after Phalatse’s removal?

DR MPHO Phalatse’s removal as Joburg Mayor is the doing of her own party.

She was sacked as Mayor after three motions of no confidence were brought against her at the first ordinary council sitting of the year on Thursday.

And ActionSA and other parties have laid the blame on DA’s arrogance.

Sthembelo Majola from ActionSA said: “The Democratic Alliance and their federal executive is squarely responsible for Phalatse’s removal. Having blocked the multi-party coalition deal formulated last week and agreed upon by negotiators of all parties, including DA negotiators.

Former mayor, Phalatse performed well under difficult circumstances and having to keep a multi-party government operating despite being repeatedly undermined by the DA’s federal executive.”

This morning DA confirmed it will raise her name to re-elect Phalatse as Mayor.

But that won’t be easy as Al Jama-ah’s Thapelo Amad, the provincial chairperson for his party, has been eyed to take over the mayor position.

The Soweto born has been the face of party’s mayoral candidate since 2019 and performed various legislative duties in the municipality of Johannesburg.

In October 2022, former mayor, ANC chairperson Dada Morero, named Amad as the MMC of Development Planning.

He will hold the fort for Morero for six months until the party is able to fix its issues with the EFF concerning a deal that went sour that was supposed to guarantee the EFF the mayoral position in Ekurhuleni.

The party described him as a politician who excels in self governance and ethics, self representation of designated groups, having knowledge of domestic public policy making, and of legislation and national skills development strategy, and their implications for political performances.
