ON Sunday, Mamelodi Sundowns will be confirmed as 2024/25 PSL Betway League champs.
This will be the 15th Downs’ title defence, 8 times in succession.
On Wednesday night, they won convincingly 3-0 against hapless Chippa United, at Buffalo Stadium.
The coronation on Sunday against Magesi FC will be for formalities; as the silverware will be presented to the ‘Masandawana’.
Led by ruthless coach Miguel Cardoso, the team broke the record that was achieved by previous local (boy) Rulani Mokwena, in terms of goals scored 60, and winning 23 matches, and will appear in the CAF Champions League final against Egyptian side Pyramids FC.
From then on, the league winners will prepare for the world club champs in America. No rest for the multimillion-rand outfit.
“For the Champions League, we trust our players. They’ve been here before. They know the weight of the badge,” Cardoso was quoted.
On being welcomed to the Mamelodi side he said: “It’s about how you connect — among yourselves, with the players, with the staff, and with the club. I think that was the key: the ambience, the spirit,” says the Portuguese, whose credentials at first were questioned.
“IF you want to win the league, come (here) to Sundowns,” boasted the excited captain of the team Ronwen Williams, and his teammates, post interviews on Wednesday evening.
