It comprised of various society groups from Soweto whose mission was to identify the best cook in loxion.
An excited Nelly Tsotetsi (30) says they worked tirelessly to beat other competent challengers.
“Having used this opportunity to enter our first challenge has reaped rewards for us, and we look forward entering other cooking competitions in both Soweto and the country,” says the Naledi Ext 2 resident.
“We would like to send our sincere thanks to White Star, for affording us this chance to show what we’re capable of, and what Sowetans are made of,” says Tsotetsi.
Batjha Society is a group of nine stokvel female members who are all childhood friends. They all originate from Soweto.
Eight Stokvels where selected to compete in a workshop where they were shown the various ways in which to prepare White Star Quick maize meal, and top four Stokvels were chosen to take part in a cook-off challenge against each other in the final round.
This is where Batjha came out flying with ‘white’ colours!
“Stokvels, good food and companionship go hand in hand,” says White Star Maize Meal Marketing Manager Mokhele Makhothi, “hence this challenge”, he said.
“Hosting a Stokvel Cooking Challenge allows White Star Super Maize Meal to interact with our consumers in a unique and exciting way that sets us apart as a brand that offers just the right blend of traditional goodness and modern convenience.
The Stokvel Cooking Challenge provided the ideal venue to introduce this versatile product to consumers,” he continued.
The winners receive R3500 voucher from Pic n Pay.
Having started as a pilot project, it is anticipated it will be an annual challenge with possibilities of growing to other areas.
Stokvel(s) is a form of getting together with friends or families whose convenient and easy model is to save money during rainy days. It is now practised all over the country.
