Zahara and Kabomo to set-alight Lyric Theatre

The event forms part of the build-up to the annual Standard Bank Joy of Jazz which takes place in Newtown from August 23 to 25.

Singing sensation Zahara is riding high after sweeping the boards with eight awards at the 18th South African Music Awards held earlier this year.

Zahara released her debut album Loliwe in 2011 which proved to be a big success as it went platinum in 13 days and double platinum after 17 days, selling more than 100 000 copies.

She was born Bulelwa Mkutukana in the Phumlani informal settlement outside of East London and is the sixth of seven children. Her stage name Zahara means “blooming flower. She sings in her native language, Xhosa, as well as in English.

Her music has been described as a mixture between the styles that have been popularised by Tracy Chapman, India.Arie and Nigerian singer Aṣa.

After 10 years of working behind the scenes in the entertainment industry, Kabomo (singer, MC, poet, producer, writer, filmmaker, actor, public speaker) has taken centre stage as a performer as well as releasing his debut album ‘All Things Grey’.

The album is a mixture of many world sounds; from lyrical street hip hop to the hums of honest classy vintage soul.

Tickets for Road to Joy of Jazz at the Lyric Theatre at Gold Reef City are available from Computicket. It’s R250 for the show.

The show starts at 5pm.
