Creative students invited to partake in fashion concept!

SA Youth in Design Talent Showcase, described as the first of its kind in the country, this thought-provoking project is designed for students who have shown passion and willingness to master their own work, courtesy of Nokia SA.
Although the pilot project will kick off in Jozi, according to the organizers Lee Management, who began operating this year, confirmed that it would grow the footprint of the concept to other areas before going nationally and SADC.
“That would be determined by the response,” says Lerato Mothibi, owner at Lee Management, talking to Sowetolife Magazine Online.
The concept resonates around inviting students that major in clothing, footwear and jewellery designs to submit designs and a motivation as to why they think their designs should be selected to showcase at the grand-finale fashion show scheduled for The Dope Store, Johannesburg on October 6 2012.
Out of large responses anticipated, only 10 designers would be eligible to strut their stuff in front of fashion critics at the show. Thereafter, selected designers will each showcase four of their best designs and a panel of judges will choose the best designs which will be sold from The Dope Store and at The Thesis Store in Soweto, respectively.
According to Mothibi, the event seeks to provide young and developing designers a platform to develop their careers, brands and designs alike.
“These would help in crafting their portfolios, be known in the industry, drive sales and sustain their respective businesses,” she says.
For the fashion show -as part of preparations- the judges namely Andile Cele (Dope Store), Paledi Segapo (Palse Homme) and Hangwa Nengovhela (Rubicon Clothing)have been tasked to ‘workshop’ selected designers and the production team which will be responsible for the event.
Cash prizes range from 1st prize R10,000, 2nd price R5,000 and 3rd R3,500, respectively.
“As part of our relationship with Nokia, we shall open discussions on how to further strengthen the marriage since we think this could be an annual event, “noted Mothibi.
Asked how were the judges selected, she said they were selected purely on merit and the amazing contribution they have deposited into the industry.
Siyabonga “Scoop” Ngwekazi will MC the event alongside Boogy Maboi, and entertainment will be provided by Malik and DJ Kenzhero.
Closing date has been extended to September 21, 2012.
