Landwind shows mettle in the hugely contested SUV market

For the uninitiated it stands for Jiangling Motor Corporation, whose presence in South Africa has been felt. It is better known for its Boarding and Vigus bakkies, respectively.

Recently we also tested the sister bakkie Changan SC- and fell in amor with it!

In came along the Landwind SUV to play with and it complied, however what happened thereafter shall remain in this fragile heart of mine, finish & klaar!

Back to the test- the Chinese made ‘by design and speed‘, as it is popularly known, is threatening the existing SUVs due to its size and internal convenience features, and yes I did enjoy it…

What about its gigantic boot space (855 litres) that could accommodate the traveling rugby team to the 2019 RWC?

It has features such as the interactive Touch Screen, airbags, controlled passenger leather seats, packaged press-button sunroof and steering wheel audio buttons.

Boom- the snag was the USB that was protruding through the cubby-hole- it looked uncomfortable but hey- that’s what it is.

The reverse sensor and rearview camera came in handy though…

The automatic Landwind boasts beauty and spaciousness. Such that, the leg-room is so vast that my In-Law enjoyed the free movement as we toiled through the farms of NW and passed the residence of Kaizer Chiefs goal-minder Itumeleng Khune’s (Ottosdal).

Interestingly, with a full tank it took us in and out of NW province- with a bit of top-up.

For its effort we took 120kms between Jozi, East Rand and Pretoria (back and forth) after clogging a 150km/h as we headed for Boks celebration after thumping Argentina at Loftus Versfeld Stadium.

In all fairness- nothing is crammed with Landwind 5 Lux SUV and ain’t shabby!

It comes standard with a five-year/100 000km service plan and a three-year/ 100 000km warranty.

It retails for R289 880

Verdict

Performance 1-10 (5)

Fuel 1-10 (7)
