The Soweto born, was laid to his final rest at West Park Cemetery, today.
In line with the Covid-19 protocols, Makhubo’s body was not present at his funeral service held in Soweto’s Orlando East Communal Hall.
Makhubo passed away on July 9, after he had been admitted to hospital for complications arising from Covid-19.
He had served as the African Nation Congress’ treasurer and later as an MMC responsible for Finance in the City of Johannesburg. In 2019 he was elected Executive Mayor of the City of Johannesburg.
President Cyril Matamela Ramaphosa described his passing a loss to the City of Johannesburg and the province at large.
ANC and NEC member Paul Mashatile, said that Makhubo was hardworking and dependable and his energy and razor-sharp mind will be missed.
Gauteng Premier David Makhura said that Makhubo’s legacy will live through his family and friends, as well as within the ANC and the communities in which he worked. “There are many things that can be said about comrade Geoff.
He was a battle-tested revolutionary, he was like tempered steel, he fought many battles but he was a great tactician.”
“To his friends, family and comrades, we are heartbroken by this monumental loss and departure of our leader, we have to mourn his untimely departure but we must celebrate his breathtaking life,” says the Premier.
Makhubo is being laid as the country faces instability and looting that has sporadically hit two provinces: Gauteng and KZN.
I, as a reporter, had on many occasions met him be it work or social gatherings. He came across as a very sharp character and mindful with words. My last interaction with him was post State of the City Address media brief, in the company of his comrade and MMC for Finance Jolidee Matongo.
The lootings and anarchy we’re seeing engulfing our country today, he would have one way or the other, played a key role in stabilising it.
