ALEXANDRA FM’s music compiler Joshua Mbatha was killed last night in Alex.
He is part of other five who were shot dead by unknown assailants.
Other shootings took place in various parts of Alexandra. It’s understood that one of the victims was a taxi driver.
As a result, the local taxi association did not take this lightly and have vowed a shutdown by blocking roads and traffic in the congested Alex.
According to Isaac Mangena, Alex FM’s chairperson, Mbatha was shot after leaving work on Thursday evening. His mobile phone and shoes were also taken by the robbers.
Known to his listeners as DJ “Jorontinah” (32) was shot in the chest while walking home from the station with two of his colleagues.
The two survived unscathed.
“We are with his father and other family members now at the clinic. Alex FM Station manager is also with his team comforting each other.
Let’s keep the family and Josh’s colleagues in our prayers. May his soul rest in peace,” Mangena was quoted in a statement.
“Police are searching for unknown armed suspects after five people were fatally shot and five injured at different places in Alexandra on Thursday, 14 July 2022. It is alleged that about four armed suspects went on to rob and shoot people in the area,” according to SAPS statement.
Two taxi associations in Alexandra have confirmed they will be leading the protests. Both Amster and ATA have drivers blockading major routes in and out of the area. The last victim was killed at 6th Roosevelt.
The shooting in Alex follows hot on the heels of a tavern shooting’s in Soweto, Orlando, Katlehong, East Rand and KZN.
The Premier of Gauteng David Makhura and Provincial Commissioner of Gauteng Elias Mawela, visited Alex this morning.
