Its lights-off for Andre De Ruyter as he lives ailing Eskom

ESKOM BOSS resigns.

Following repeated loadshedding throughout the country, Andre De Ruyter has decided to hand over his resignation letter, amid pressure from all sectors in the country.

But the question on many, including this reporter, is will loadshedding end?

With festive season upon us, and 8 to 10-hour power cuts daily the country faces one of the worst energy crisis ever.

SA is currently experiencing Stage 5 load shedding, expected to increase to 6 in coming days and weeks.

The country recorded almost 2000 hours of rolling blackouts.

At the time of publishing the resignation was not confirmed officially by Eskom, suffice to say, today it was former DA leader Mmusi Maimane who visited the social media and was quoted: “I’m told Eskom CEO Andre De Ruyter will be removed today as he failed to solve the energy crisis.”

Suggestions are De Ruyter informed the Eskom board of his decision to resign on Wednesday. In 2021 the embattled CE was quoted as having said ”I’m staying put” following calls for his resignation.

The former head of Statistics South Africa Dr Pali Lehohla said De Ruyter should have be replaced by an engineer.

“Eskom is an engineering-cum-economic behemoth. It is an engineering animal and an economic animal. At the moment, it is not led by engineers, nor by economists. So, you cannot expect it to perform. Instead, it is led by politicians and accountants and they are trying to understand the logic of Eskom.”

Business organisations have been calling for De Ruyter’s head for sometimes.

The Young Nurses Indaba Trade Union (YNITU) earlier this week also said he must be fired.

“YNITU demands that Mr Andre de Ruyter must be fired because his gross incompetence is costing lives.“

According to The Star ventilators stop working during load shedding.

Million-rand question is: who has the capacity and bravery to deal with the mess at the troubled Eskom?
