Bafana Bafana have qualified for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in America, following a convincing win 3-0 over hapless Rwanda.
Mbombela Stadium in Nelspruit was packed as fans rallied behind the squad, with vuvuselas blaring unwittingly and dancing being the order on the evening.
The team last qualified for WC in 2002.
Coach/manager Hugo Broos and his charges had to raise the bar following the 3-points deduction by FIFA as a result of Teboho Mokoena acquiring two-yellow cards against Lesotho in March, a school-boy error by a SAFA technical member.
Although Bafana did the job by fortifying a must win to avoid any permutations, the team should also thank their nemesis Nigeria that outfoxed Benin by the same margin, this evening.
This win places Bafana at the top of the Group C log, followed by Nigeria.
During post media brief the jubilant Broos said although he kept motivating his players to focus on what was before them, alluded pressure was mounting following the draw with Zimbabwe last week, and the deduction of 3-points.
With excitement written all over his face, Sport Minister Gayton McKenzie also reiterated “we’re going to America for the WC”, as he gave high fives to the players and technical team.
The concern was Rwanda and SA are not ‘good friends’ following the deadly issue in DRC where some of SA soldiers were ambushed, secondly, Rwanda is bidding to host the F1 of which SA is vying for and both Presidents taking a go at each other, thus the assumption would be Rwanda would at all cost derail Bafana’s WC’s dream.
