AMSTEL Lager activated its biggest Golden Fan Club shindig yet at Elkah Stadium in Rockville, Soweto where throngs of Orlando Pirates FC supporters witnessed their favourite team clinching the Betway Premier League championship on the final day of the 2025/2026 season – amidst much fanfare on the afternoon of May 23.
Having given “the Ghost” (Orlando Pirates FC fans) moments to remember – the Buccaneers’ faithful from different walks of life came together at the razzmatazz to witness one final showdown which resulted in the Soweto giant defeating Orbit College FC 2-0 at Mbombela Stadium – to end a 14-year league title wait.
Own goals from Orbit College FC goalkeeper Sabelo Nkomo just before the half-time break, and another by defender Ndumiso Ngiba, just after the restart was enough to send scores of attendees at the rendezvous into unrestrainable rapture!
As a new sponsor of the Soweto soccer giant, Amstel had hosted the biggest viewing party in Soweto to experience a full-day of football in celebration of the club, the culture, and the supporters who bring the game to life.
Radio and TV host, Melody Miya directed the programme on the day – guiding the fans through what, to their relief, turned out to be a championship-clinching viewing party.
Erstwhile Orlando Pirates FC players, Steve Lekoelea, Edward Motale and Happy Jele made special appearances – to the fans’ delight.
A huge viewing screen dominated a layout which consisted of a stage from which performers such as Zee Nxumalo and DJ Kent entertained the audience, and a huge marquee under which attendees socialized and watched the deciding match.
Hosted on a well-manicured cricket pitch tinged with both festival weather and atmosphere, guests of varying hues were treated to a layout which included leather couch seating and fun and games zones. The venue also included food kiosks offering eclectic fare and beverage bars from which guests would purchase refreshments.
Enough portable urinals as well as round-the-clock attendants were provided and on hand respectively, for the men’s convenience – and a substantial SAPS personnel presence ensured that the event occurred sans incident.
On the evidence of how the shindig came to pass, jubilant fans had indeed heeded the call of the publicity agency which had urged them to: make sure you bring your energy, your jersey, and your people!
