Black Consciousness leader to be honoured in Soweto

Rev Wauchope who grew up in Dlamini, died away from his people in exile in May, 2011.

Honoured. Former BCM leader Reverend George Wauchope’s tombstone will be unveiled near his home in Dlamini, Soweto.

He only returned to the country of his birth in ashes after his cremation in London. Before his exile he had become an ardent political activist and faith leader.

He was expelled from University, worked with the likes of Bishop Desmond Tutu, harassed by security forces and forced to flee the country.

Following his death -in line with his wishes- he was cremated and his ashes strewn into the Klip River not far from his home.

The Gauteng provincial government has continued with its programme to honour and remember unsung heroes of the struggle.

Those already honoured include icons such as Bertha Gxowa, Selope Thema and Sam Ntuli among others.

The event will also include the remembrance of some of the Wauchope (and the extended Kalaote) family members who themselves went on to become political activists on the influence of Rev Wauchope.

Proceedings will start with a church service at the St Hilda’s Anglican Church in Senaoane where Rev Wauchope served as a minister.

It will be followed by tombstone unveiling at Avalon Cemetery and the unveiling of the Beacon at the Park.

Date: Friday, 21 April 2017
Time: 07:00
Venue: St Hilda’s Anglican Church, Senaoane corner Mabalane and Mhlathuze Streets
