Changan Hunter bakkie shows mettle thanks to its 1.9-litre 4-cylinder turbodiesel engine

THE exterior of Hunter bakkie screams CHANGAN letters coated across the tailgate.

That’s the first. Secondly, oversized front grille is the most distinctive design feature.

Now that you may have an idea on the extent of this bakkie- don’t be surprised the ground clearance stands at 226 mm, sufficient for the off-road use I experienced, and also handles well against potholes and improper roads, associated with villages, etc.

The Changan Hunter 2.0TD Double-Cab 4×4 CE bakkie also offers 265/60 R18 tyres that deserve specific mentioning, their 60-profile sidewalls offer better absorption over rough surfaces than shorter-profile alternatives, contributing to a composed off-road ride.

Packed with 1.9-litre 4-cylinder turbodiesel engine and 110 kW / 350 Nm torque, it comes in 6-speed auto specification.

Diesel consumption claimed 9.1 L/100 km.

During my test, I fiddled with both the Hill-descent control and hill-start assist to check its reliability. The 4×4 system — switchable between two-wheel drive and four-wheel drive, with a low-range transfer case and rear differential lock available, proved capable.

At times I did switch to Sport and Eco modes available via dedicated buttons next to the gearlever — and they make a noticeable difference to throttle response, sharpening or blunting it respectively.

As for chrome door handles, side steps, roof rails, and 18-inch alloy wheels fill the arches convincingly.

Talk of convincing- Hunter, the hunted, from 0-100km/h claimed 15.37 seconds, despite the rugged road.

The load bay is practically useful: it is lined to prevent paint damage from cargo, features a 12 V power outlet, and is illuminated by cargo lighting — a genuinely handy inclusion when loading or unloading after dark.

On the interior- it features 10-inch touchscreen infotainment system, dual USB-A charging ports, electrically adjustable front seats with leather upholstery, storage hooks on the backs of both front seats, yes, cruise control, rear-view camera and rear parking sensors.

Safety- consist of six airbags.

The cabin layout is ergonomically well crafted- so is the dashboard.

Hunter as a bakkie- does not feature or support Apple CarPlay or Android Auto- take it on a chin…but enjoy the ride!

In terms of warranty Hunter comes in with a 5-year/150 000 km warranty.

Changan Hunter 2.0TD Double-Cab 4×4 CE retails for R569 900.
