Charlotte Maxeke to be commemorated in Soweto

THE GAUTENG Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation, in partnership with the Charlotte Mannya Maxeke Institute, will celebrate the life, legacy and heritage of liberation heroine Charlotte Maxeke, on 06 April 2023, the eve of what would be her birthday on the 7 of April.   

Maxeke has been described by as a pioneer who gave her life for our democracy, freedom, and human rights. Her legacy has made freedom, self-actualisation, and selflessness a reality to many South Africans, especially women.

Thursday’s programme will commence with a prayer at Maxeke’s former home which will be followed by a wreath laying ceremony for the icon at the Nancefield Cemetery and a visit to the Charlotte Maxeke Community Garden in Kiptown, Soweto.

The day’s proceedings will conclude with a church service the A.M.E Church in Diepkloof, with the service focused on “The Role of Church in Society”.

The Gauteng Provincial Government’s collaboration with the Charlotte Mannya Maxeke Institute will expand in the future through the implementation of annual development initiatives relating to role played by Charlotte Maxeke in contribution to uplifting the community and heritage preservation.
