City of Jhb to in-source services -Mashaba

Considerable. Jhb Mayor Herman Mashaba will soon in-source services following huge corrupt cases the City face.

This follows considerable amount of corrupt cases the City has experienced in the past, were security guards are paid on average R4 500 per guard, while the City pays R14 000 for each contracted guard.

“The City has paid‚ on average‚ R14 000 per security guard‚ while the guards themselves received as little as R4‚500 as a salary per month‚” he said in a statement.

Currently‚ the City outsources its security services through over 150 contracts with service providers.

Mashaba said: “Our approach in this matter was to find a means of offering these contract workers the dignity of fair pay‚ stable employment and benefits available to employees of the City.”

“Due to the complexities of local government regulations‚ cases of corruption‚ contractual commitments and legal considerations‚ the time taken to implement this process has been considerable‚” said the Mayor.

The City is currently undergoing an extensive process of ensuring the smooth integration of these security personnel while guaranteeing the financial sustainability of the entire operation, that would not affect delivery, he reiterated, without giving the time frame.
