FNB launch Digital Enablement Programme (DEP) designed for SMEs

AS digital technologies continue to reshape industries at an accelerated pace, the ability of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to adapt has become a defining factor in their survival and growth.

Across key sectors, particularly those undergoing rapid transformation, businesses that fail to integrate digital capabilities face an increasing risk of stagnation or failure.

In response to this rapidly shifting landscape, FNB has launched its Digital Enablement Programme (DEP), an intensive 18‑month initiative designed to prepare SMEs to transition effectively into a digital-first economy. The programme focuses on equipping businesses with the capabilities required not only to survive, but to remain competitive and relevant in an evolving business environment.

With a client base of more than 1.2 million SMEs across South Africa, FNB has developed deep, data-driven insights into the realities, challenges, and opportunities facing small businesses.

This scale of engagement, combined with the specialised expertise of experienced implementation partners such as Edge Growth, positions FNB to design solutions that are both practical and responsive to the needs of the market. This collective experience has informed the structure of the Digital Enablement Programme, ensuring it is not a one-size-fits-all intervention, but a targeted and fit-for-purpose solution tailored to SMEs operating within industries undergoing rapid digital disruption, including manufacturing, logistics, infrastructure, construction, and the green economy.

“Digital transformation is no longer optional; it is foundational to how businesses operate, compete, and grow,” says Palesa Moeletsi, SME Business Development Support Manager at FNB.

“We are seeing a clear shift in how value is created across industries, driven by technology, data, and changing customer expectations. For many SMEs, the challenge is not just adopting digital tools but fundamentally rethinking how they do business.”

While ICT adoption presents significant opportunities, many SMEs remain constrained by barriers such as limited digital skills, high implementation costs, infrastructure challenges, and restricted access to funding. Without deliberate intervention, these barriers risk widening the gap between businesses that can transition and those that are left behind.

The FNB Digital Enablement Programme will therefore address these barriers by offering a tailored, practical, and high‑touch support model grounded in three key focus areas:

  • Access to Skills
  • Building the digital and operational capabilities required for SMEs to confidently adopt and integrate new technologies.
  • Access to Market
  • Improving digital visibility, customer engagement, and readiness to integrate into modern supply chains and digital sales channels.
  • Access to Funding
  • Supporting SMEs in identifying and accessing appropriate financial instruments for digital upgrades – spanning both software and capital‑intensive hardware solutions.

Through tailored diagnostics, practical workshops, expert advisory, and hands-on implementation, SMEs are supported to embed digital thinking into their operations.

The objective is not just digitisation, but transformation; enabling businesses to operate more efficiently, access new markets, and remain competitive in a rapidly evolving environment.

Moeletsi emphasises the urgency of preparing SMEs for this shift:

“Across the industries we support, the risk is clear; businesses that do not adapt to the digital economy will increasingly struggle to compete. Our focus is on preparing SMEs for this new way of doing business by equipping them with the right capabilities, tools, and support systems to transition with confidence.”

The programme also recognises that sustainable digital transformation requires more than technology adoption. It requires a shift in mindset, operating models, and business strategy ensuring that SMEs are positioned not only for immediate gains, but for long-term resilience and growth.

As part of its broader commitment to enterprise development, FNB continues to invest in initiatives that strengthen the competitiveness of SMEs and enable greater participation in South Africa’s evolving economic landscape.

By supporting SMEs to navigate digital disruption, the Digital Enablement Programme aims to build a pipeline of future-fit businesses that can contribute meaningfully to economic growth, job creation, and industry advancement.
