Great leaders never die or fade- in remembrance of Uncle ‘Kathy’

Gallants of our struggle. All dearly departed from right- utata Walter Sisulu, Ahmed Kathrada, Dr Nelson Mandela and Govan Mbeki. Image SLM.

Kathrada, who died earlier this week, was arrested at Liliesleaf in July 1963, along with seven other leaders of the liberation movement.

A modest and self-effacing person, Uncle Kathy, as he was affectionately known, epitomised the very core, meaning and essence of the South African struggle for non-racism, justice and equality.

Says Nicholas Wolpe, CEO of Liliesleaf: “Although he has passed away his voice and message will never be forgotten.

Great leaders never die or fade. We invite everyone to honour, commemorate and reflect on the life and times of this iconic and much-loved struggle stalwart. We will be lighting candles outside the historic thatched cottage where Uncle Kathy was arrested more than 50 years ago.”

‘Oom Kathy’ was buried on Thursday April 30.

The proceedings on Saturday April 1, begin from 11h00.

Entrance to Liliesleaf is free.

Liliesleaf is located at 7 George Avenue, Rivonia.
