‘Mampyane or Gommorah’ as Alex is fondly known by its natives, will host the annual Reverend Sam Buti Fun Walk at the Uniting Reformed Church in Southern Africa, corner Sam Buti Street and 5th Avenue, Alexandra.
A Theologian, Rev Buti was a former mayor of the township and the pioneer of the “Save Alexandra Campaign”, amongst others.
In his honour it made sense for the organizers to begin the walk from the church where it all began, as a young preacher until his retirement.
The church was also the spiritual home to Dr Beyers Naude after being evicted from the NG Kerk for standing against segregation in the church.
In remembrance, Dr Buti and family believe healthy lifestyle should be preached to youth’s whom some have gone off the rails due to crime and drugs ravaging this famous township, hence the annual walk.
The 5.5km walk will begin from the church and end at the recently launched Alex Mall which features plaques of icons who placed the township of Alexandra on the map from different disciplines in arts, education and politics, says Mpho Mothapo -one of the event organizers.
The programme of the day includes the Reverend’s plaque unveiling by his wife (Mary), family, councillors and dignitaries whose lives were touched by the works of this legend.
It begins from the church on Saturday 9 September from 7am up right up to Alex Mall.
Entry fee children R30 & Adults R50.
