Getting hands dirty. Kids from Soweto took part in the making of the wall mural as part of the KFC Add Hope initiative at Vilakazi Str, Orlando, recently.

As such, Kentucky Fried Chicken in South Africa strives to put a smile on kids, as food security is becoming uncontrollable and reaching boiling point.

In an attempt to curb the scourge, the company -synonymous with red and white colours- is rolling out campaigns to reach out over 110 000 children all over mzansi, a day.

One such is the wall mural in the world’s famous Vilakazi Street, Orlando Soweto, that include a wire tree which carries seeds of hope (tomato seeds), that the community can pick and take home to plant in their own gardens.

This according to Cathy Qama, CSI and sponsorship manager at KFC will encourage kids in understanding the importance of planting and eating healthy.

With October being identified as World Hunger month, KFC continues to highlight programmmes that deal socially with children’s needs countrywide.

Posed how the number is quantified, Qama says:” We use our 110 organizations countrywide as our networks to quantify the number. These also include our beneficiaries such as the JAM organization, etc.

This is also augmented by our Mini Cricket project, of which we have a strong presence nationally. This justifies our projected number,” she said.

The tree will remain on Vilakazi Street for the weekend until Sunday, October 16.

One of the artist’s Thabo Waga Modise, from ShovaLifestyle said the whole project took three days to complete.

“It involved 50 children, including Boys & Girls Club South Africa, from Pimville- Soweto, one of the Add Hope beneficiaries,” says the Dobsonville born.

In his parting shot, the lanky lad encouraged South Africans to give hope to the children by contributing R2, that would go a long way in transforming their lives, one day at a time, he said.
