McKenzie place compatriot and his deputy Kunene on absence of leave due to serious allegations

JOHANNESBURG MMC for Transport Kenny Kunene has been ‘removed’, until full investigation is complete.

That was an order from Patriotic Alliance leader and Minister of Sport and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, following serious allegations levelled against his compatriot and deputy Kunene.

It has emerged that Kunene was at the Sandton home of businessman, Katiso Molefe, at the time of his arrest this week.

Molefe is facing charges in the murder case of musician DJ Sumbody. He appeared on Tuesday at the Alexandra Magistrate Court, alongside other accused.

In his defence, Kunene denied knowing Molefe, saying he was at his property by coincidence on Monday, for an exclusive interview with Molefe for his online publication, in the company of a journalist.

McKenzie, on Tuesday evening, announced on PA’s social page that the party will be launching a full investigation.

The minister said they will be sharing the findings of their investigation.

He believes Kunene is innocent.

“Kenny Kunene will be investigated. Lawyers of good character [will be] investigating him. And while he’s being investigated, I’m going to remove him from being an MMC.

“I’m also going to tell him to stand back from politics for one month until the investigation is done.

This is the hardest thing I ever had to do in my life – to act against Kenny Kunene.”

Kunene did not respond for a comment.

Meanwhile, opposition party DA is having none of it and said Kenny must be fired by Mayor of Joburg- Dada Morero, with immediate effect.

At the time of publishing the CoJ communication team and spokesperson Nthatise Modingoane, had not offered a response on whether the City will suspend Kunene.
