THE AFRICAN National Congress has dismissed Elias Sekgobela Magashule for not toeing the line.
Better known to you and I as Ace, he has been expelled for bringing the ruling party into disrepute, amongst other litany of charges he faced.
The decision follows National Disciplinary Committee that found him guilty following the May 2021 attempt to suspend President Cyril Ramaphosa as party leader.
NDC is chaired by no-nonsense Rev Frank Chikane, who do not ‘see-eye to-eye’ with Ace, since the administration of former Pres Thabo Mbeki. Rev Chikane was a director-general.
The former Secretary-General refused to follow the party’s controversial ‘step aside rule’ after being charged with corruption related to the asbestos case now before the Bloemfontein High Court.
The former Free State Premier instead dug in, forcing the party to suspend him, that was announced by the late deputy and acting secretary-general Jessie Duarte.
Magashule was given seven days to show cause as to why he should not be expelled from the ANC, he did not succumb to that.
“I’m fine. I saw breaking news on social media and television about my expulsion. I’m OK. I’m not perturbed” he was quoted.
Described by many as a ‘man with nine lives’ Magashule said he would be speaking to the media about the latest development at a later stage.
Its unknown if he will join forces with his erstwhile and palooka Carl Niehaus (Radical Economic Transformation) who was also expelled from the ANC.
A teacher by profession and amateur boxer in his hey-days Ace, will find it cold outside the organisation that he made his home from early days as an activist. Yes, the power he wielded is finally coming to an end, or is it?
‘It should have been love but its over now’- as one popular song lyrics go.
