‘OSCARS of the travel industry’ as punted by the tourism industry, the World Travel Awards has recognised South Africa’s- Park Hyatt Johannesburg, as Africa’s Leading New Hotel for 2026.
The announcement was made at the glittering awards ceremony held at the Africa Gala Ceremony, Diamonds Bijoux in Zanzibar, Tanzania, on 28 August.
It was pitted against equally strong nominees from Botswana, Kenya, Morocco, Rwanda, and Tanzania.
Perched in the commercial Rosebank, the hotel was only opened to the public in 2025, as Park Hyatt brand’s third address in Africa, this goes on to show the pedigree associated with it, from staff to eloquent design and award-winning Chefs.
The 31 room establishment, proves the award reads less as a milestone than as a measure of how the team has settled into its work.
The award winning property occupies a restored 1930s residence in Rosebank, a building shaped by the architectural influence of Sir Herbert Baker.
Arched colonnades, high ceilings and wide verandahs were retained through the restoration, and the property is arranged around an open-air courtyard anchored by a mature jacaranda and a heated pool.
A locally curated art and design programme runs floor by floor, drawing on the region’s botanical history and archival collections.
The hotel’s award winning restaurant, Room 32, cooks over open fire under Executive Chef Karel Jacobs and Chef de Cuisine Chrizelle Venter, with a menu built around South African produce and a wine list weighted to Cape estates.
On the achievement the jubilant Atef Soliman, General Manager of Park Hyatt Johannesburg, commented: “An award like this belongs to the people who do the preparation.
Thirty-one room means there is nowhere to hide and no reason to guess. Our colleagues know who is arriving, what matters to them and what went wrong last time.
The work happens in the hours before a guest walks in, and by the time they do, the hotel should feel as though it has been expecting them all along. That is a discipline, and this team has built it faster than I have seen anywhere.”
Park Hyatt Johannesburg has built its service standards around what happens before a guest reaches the door. Each arrival is worked through in advance: previous stays are read, preferences are logged and carried forward, dietary needs reach the kitchen days ahead, and rooms are set the night before rather than on the morning of check-in.
Housekeeping, concierge, front office and the kitchen sit in the same daily briefing, so a request made to one person is known to all of them by the time it matters.
Soliman also alluded that, preparation is invisible when it works.
‘A guest who mentioned a preference for a firmer pillow eighteen months ago in another city finds it waiting. A returning couple is given the room they liked, on the floor they liked, without having to ask twice’.
Previous winners of the category include Angama Amboseli- Kenya in 2024 and Singita Milele, Tanzania in 2025, respectively.
Established in 1993 by the World Travel Awards, to recognise excellence across every sector of travel and tourism.
