SENIOR Police Investigators have been assigned to hunt down the killers of Kaizer Chief’s player Luke Fleurs.
The unfortunate robbery took place this week at Honeydew Fuel garage, Jozi, in the evening.
Fleurs was tragically killed in a hijacking gone wrong. It is believed that he was shot in the process.
According to Gauteng police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Mavela Masondo:” While waiting to be served by the petrol attendant, he [Fleurs] was confronted by two armed males who came driving a white BMW 1 Series.
The suspects dragged Fleurs out of the car at gunpoint and shot him once in the upper body. One of the suspects fled the scene in the player’s car, followed by the accomplice in the BMW,” he told City Press.
The defender was yet to make his Chiefs debut, having just signed for the club in October last year, after being released by SuperSport.
During the Afcon break, Chiefs interim coach Cavin Johnson hinted that the former SA U23, was edging closer to his debut.
Kaizer Chiefs released a statement as follows: “We (Chiefs representatives) are going to see his (Fleurs) family and everything else will be communicated after that visit. We cannot say much now to the media as the police are yet to take statements,” Vina Maphosa, the club’s spokesperson was quoted.
Fleurs started his football journey atUbuntu Academy development. He was then spotted by the watchful eye of SuperSport United.
It did not take long for the player to adapt and prove his worth to Matsatsantsa. Despite his young age, he quickly became a regular and it was then no surprise that he was selected for the SA U23 side for the2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.
He was (24) at the time of his death.
Various coaches, clubs and the minister of Sport, Zizi have sent their messages of condolences to the family.
The investigations are still on going.
