Rea Vaya busses suspended in Soweto following the shooting of two drivers

The Mayor of the City of Johannesburg, Dada Morero together with his mayoral committee and city manager have expressed their shock and dismay at the senseless killing of two Rea Vaya bus drivers and expressed their deepest condolences to their family and friends.

In two separate incidents the young drivers were fatally shot last night at approximately 8.30pm in Protea Glen and Mapetla Soweto, on BRT feeder routes by unknown gunmen.

The city has subsequently suspended all bus operations until further notice pending a plan of action to escort and protect drivers and busses from further possible attacks. SAPS and JMPD are investigating the shooting and an update will be given once conclusive evidence and information is available.

“We want to assure our drivers and commuters that everything possible will be done to protect them including immediate engagements with the taxi industry, Provincial law and safety agencies and importantly a detailed risk assessment of BRT routes and stations”, says Acting City Manager Tshepo Makola.
