South African rapper, Simiso Zwane, who goes by the stage name ‘OkMalumKoolKat’ was arrested last week for allegedly sexually assaulting a woman in her hotel room in the city of Hobart in Australia.
Zwane was in the country to perform at the Mona Foma Annual Music Festival when the incident occurred.
During the case, the court heard that Zwane returned to his hotel at 5:30am after a post show drinking session with friends.
In his drunken state, the rapper was unable to find his room and entered the victims room through a sliding door which had been slightly open.
The victim woke to find Zwane, a complete stranger, in her bed kissing her neck and rubbing his hands over her private parts.
According to the prosecutor, Rebecca Lancaster, he then told her “don’t make any noise.”
Zwane stopped after the victim, who can’t be identified, told him to leave.
According to The Mercury, Lawyer Steven Chopping said Zwane was “remorseful, ashamed and embarrassed” by the crime and had been jet-lagged, intoxicated and confused at the time.
The rapper plead guilty to the charges and was sentenced to six months jail with five months suspended.
Zwane will spend one month in jail dated back to last Saturday.
In a statement issued by a PR company representing Zwane, his management state that this news comes as a surprise and is out of character for the rapper:
At this stage, we have limited information regarding the judgement on Simiso Zwane in Australia, but with no previous legal charges or history of any violence whatsoever and knowing Simiso as we and most of you all do, we can say that the news comes as a huge surprise and one which has truly rocked us all. Having said this, we are by no means disputing the woman’s claims which are taken incredibly seriously and must abide by the courts ruling. Our thoughts are with all affected and who will continue to be affected by this terrible situation.
We will update you on the progress of this unfortunate incident. Your patience during this period will be greatly appreciated. We ask that all queries be directed to his PR Team at Stamp Communications.
With a conviction for indecent assault and assault with indecent intent Zwane’s international career is not looking bright.
