Though not fat themselves- Fat Cats launch its inaugural 10km race for October

The club has secured Waterfall Park at Mall of Africa to host its inaugural race meeting – Fat Cats 10km Race – on Sunday, 13 October 2019.

The race is sanctioned by Central Gauteng Athletics (CGA), and will comprise of a 10km race, 5km fun run, a 1,6km Kitten Miler and a 250m Nappy Dash.

Fat Cats Athletic Club chairperson Refiloe Rakwena said the club is immensely humbled by the confidence shown by CGA and the confirmed venue, Waterfall Park at Mall of Africa.

“The race with the secured venue of Waterfall Park at Mall of Africa, affirms the running and corporate communities’ belief and support of our ambitions as a young club.

“Hosting an event of this nature is integral to our vision, as Fat Cats aims to assume a leading role in changing the outlook of road running in South Africa. As a club, we continue to roll out campaigns that seek to put the spotlight on critical social issues, while also enhancing dialogue in our communities. To this end, our 2019 focus is to promote safety for runners through our #SafetyBeforeMileage campaign,” added Rakwena.

Commenting on the 10km route, Technical Lead Bongani Bilankulu said they’ve leveraged on the location to design a fairly challenging and scenic route for runners.

“The route will give runners a taste of Waterfall’s notorious hills, while also allowing a glimpse of the best views of Waterfall City.

Starting at Waterfall Park at Mall of Africa, runners will head to Woodmead via the R55 and return to the mall via Old Pretoria Road,” said Bilankulu.
