GOING nowhere slowly.
This follows the arrest of controversial North West businessman and ANC treasurer Suliman Carrim on Thursday evening at the OR Tambo International Airport.
According to confirmed reports, Carrim was due to board an international flight, and was seen carrying tons of luggage.
Following the bust, the (49) appeared at the Pretoria Court today and denied bail, owing to confirmation of his residential address, amongst others.
His legal representative had argued that Carrim should be granted bail, telling the court that he suffers from a heart condition and anxiety and could experience a panic attack if he remains in custody.
Carrim had avoided appearing again at the Madlanga Commission to answer about his business dealings with controversial businessman Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala, whose company, Medicare24, was awarded a disputed R360-million South African Police Service (SAPS) healthcare services tender.
He had confirmed to the commission about a loan of approximately R10-million to Matlala, with his financial dealings and related transactions coming under scrutiny during questioning.
On Thursday evening, Police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe confirmed the arrest but did not publicly identify the man, saying he had been arrested for failing to appear before the Commission.
“The suspect was arrested for failing to appear before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry,” said Mathe.
Whether he will be exchanging pleasantries in the corridors with fellow inmate Matlala- your guess is just good as mine.
