Will Mpofu’s defence mechanism work as he faces LPC?

SENIOR Lawyer Dali Mpofu has been summoned by the Legal Practice Council for disciplinary hearings.

A well rounded Advocate, who speaks his mind in court, Mpofu faces litany of serious allegations that could have profound implications not only for his career, but also for the reputation of the legal profession as a whole in the country.

He faces seven distinct charges related to violations of the rules that govern legal practitioners in SA, amongst them:

Damaging the reputation of the Legal Profession, insulting behaviour, neglecting professional responsibilities, and additional charges that further detail these violations will be examined during the hearing.

During a heated Parliament hearings on impeached former Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane, Mpofu who was defending Mkhwebane, once remarked to chair of the committee Dyantyi “Your day will come” but it seems it has come too early for Mpofu.

Another matter that made headlines was when he addressed a colleague during the Zondo Commission, inappropriately.

If found guilty of any of the above charges, he could face a range of penalties, including:

  • Suspension or Expulsion from the Legal Practice Council: Depending on the severity of the violations, Mpofu could be suspended or even expelled from the LPC, effectively ending his legal career.
    • Reputational Damage: Regardless of the outcome, the public nature of the hearing and the charges against him could irreparably damage his reputation, making it difficult for him to practice law in the future.
    • Financial Consequences: Legal battles can be costly, and Mpofu may incur significant legal fees as he defends himself against these charges.

Currently, Mpofu is a member of Umkhonto WeSizwe Party and legally represent its founder and former SA President Jacob Gedleyehlekisa Zuma.
