Zuma, a headache for ANC as elections looms

THE ANC NEC meeting will convene today to discuss preparations ahead of the January 8 statement and the participation of former President Jacob Zuma as an ex-officio in the movement.

The meeting comes days before the party’s 112th birthday celebrations and concerns around Zuma publicly endorsing and supporting the newly formed MK Political Party.

The NEC is expected to discuss the participation of Zuma as an ex-officio of the movement.

“We supported President Zuma as the President of the ANC. And we’ve had a rich history with him. We are here. There is leadership in the ANC. Looking at what is happening, it is up to an individual, It’s the choice he’s made, and I think he must be given the right to express himself but what we must do is to protect what remains of the African National Congress,” says Nomvula Mokonyane, ANC Deputy Secretary General.

Despite the shortcomings, Mokonyane says that given the ANC’s state, unity remains important.

“We all are lobbying each other around what must be the message for 2024 and what must be the key features.of the organizational task. January 8 statement is not about new developments but the agenda of the ANC,” she says.

The ANC is yet to officially take disciplinary action against Zuma.
