E-tolls to be scrapped altogether, assures Gvt

THE Organisation Undoing Tax Abuse (OUTA) has been vocal about the scrapping of e-tolls.

It seems this will be a reality when Government announced the controversial e-tolls will be officially scrapped by Friday.

This was confirmed during a media brief today in Pretoria, were all parties involved agreed on this resolution, South African National Roads Agency (Sanral), the Gauteng Provincial Government and the National Treasury.

“From the 12 of April 2024, road users will no longer be charged for the use of the e-toll network. This means that after midnight tomorrow, e-tolls will no longer exist in South Africa.

However, the roads that formed part of this scheme will remain national. It has been a long process that started in December 2013 after we upgraded parts of the national roads in Gauteng,” says Transport Minister, Sindisiwe Chikunga during her key address to media on Wednesday.

But those who have outstanding e-tolling debt are still obliged to settle that debt, according to Gvt.

OUTA’s Wayne Duvenage was quoted as having said ‘this is long overdue’ and hoped this matter will be now be put to bed.
