Fresh Produce Market to be established in Soweto

THE MMC for Economic Development in the City of Johannesburg, Nomoya Mnisi, the Joburg Market Board Chairperson, Mzikayise Ndlovuand its CEO Sello Makhubela recently conducted an oversight visit to Soweto to assess potential sites for the establishment of a fresh produce market.

The planned market forms part of the City’s long-term strategy of bringing the market to the people.

In addition to improving accessibility, the project is expected to stimulate township economic activity. The market will create opportunities for informal traders, emerging farmers, transporters and small businesses, while generating employment opportunities for local communities.

The initiative aligns with broader goals of spatial transformation and inclusive economic participation.

Feasibility studies will be conducted in the identified areas over the coming months to determine the most suitable operational model, infrastructure requirements and sustainability measures for the Soweto Market.

MMC Mnisi emphasised the importance of the initiative in driving economic growth within township communities:

“This project represents a shift in how we deliver food access and economic opportunity. By bringing market infrastructure closer to communities, we are ensuring that township economies can thrive, creating spaces where local entrepreneurs and traders can grow their businesses.

“Residents will not only benefit from affordable, fresh produce, but the initiative will also foster job creation, skills development, and inclusive participation in the agricultural value chain,” Mnisi said.

The oversight visit marks a significant milestone in expanding the trading of fresh produce beyond the city centre and ensuring that historically underserved communities benefit directly from market infrastructure and economic development opportunities.
